Homegrown. Grassroots. Funded by teachers and the Oakridge community, since 2003 it is the largest “Oakridge only” scholarship available to graduating seniors. The OEA Building A Better World Scholarship consists of three $1000 scholarship – Global Awareness, Community Involvement, and Independent Travel, and is open to all graduating Oakridge High School seniors.

Our Evaluation Committee for the 2013 Building A Better World Scholarship was made up of an eclectic bunch of guys.  What a great group!  Past winners – Corey Swanson (2009), Nyssa Swanson (2010), and Shelby Dryer (2010) – along with Jon Kuipers and Kati MacPherson – from way back in the 90’s, our two year College Advisor Kelsey Stewart, Mrs. Swainston, Mrs. Schroeder, and me (Mr. Wood).

If you would like to join us this year in reading and talking and working through the various scholarship essays – please let us know.  First though, you gotta donate.  Please spread the word.  And please spread the wealth.  Building A Better World Scholarship is a great way to make this world a better place.

2013 Building A Better World Scholarship Winners

In 2013 the OEA Building A Better World Scholarship crossed a Scholarship milestone.  We handed out four $1500 scholarships –  thanks in large measure to so many new contributors. This was a great year for donations…large and small.  We now have — on board, including the Oakridge Education Association and the Oakridge Parent Association.  Please go hear for a list of our 2013 contributors – thanks so much.

2012 OEA Building A Better World honors 4 Oakridge Seniors

Please go here for the history of the scholarship and for directions on how to apply in 2013.

2012 Winners – Nick Huisnigh (Community Involvement), Sam Fox (Independent Travel), Jacob Barnard (Global Awareness), Hunter Koster (Global Awareness / Travel).   Nick (GVSU) and Jacob (University of Michigan) have been awarded $1000 scholarships to their perspective universities.  Sam and Hunter will both be attending MCC in the Fall, and will be provided $1000 travel vouchers for their scheduled journeys in the summer of 2013; Sam to North Carolina and Hunter a summer semester abroad to Mexico with MCC Spanish Club.
